Cadet of the Month for May is Cadet Airman Basic Santiago. He is a Freshman here at William L. Dickinson High School and is a first year cadet. His role in the squadron is  D&C (Drill and Ceremony) Commander Assistant. As D&C Commander Assistant he aids the D&C Commander in moving equipment such as flags and rifles as well as keeping them accounted for. The job also requires him to attend D&C every day. He describes his job as difficult but also as his greatest achievement in AFJROTC. The biggest obstacle he faced would be waking up at 6:30 for D&C, but by building discipline he was able to overcome it.

C/Santiago's favorite parts of AFJROTC is drill Monday and also learning new things about the Air Force from Master Sergeant Aguilera. In addition to drill C/Santiago participates in the Firebirds’ new cadet drill team. His biggest inspiration is Cadet Major Rajesh. He explains that C/Rajesh is very welcoming to new cadets and also quite helpful.

Wanting to become a cop C/Santiago joined JROTC. He saw AFJROTC as a stepping stone towards building the discipline required. Now C/Santiago is still thinking about becoming a cop but also is thinking about going to college or joining the Marines.

For numerous reasons C/Santiago recommends  AFJROTC. He believes the program can help build discipline, respect, and confidence. In addition he believes the program can help in many different unexpected ways.

C/Santiago has been awarded the title of Cadet of the Month due to his outstanding performance that has not gone unnoticed.
